Sample WAEC WASSCE Physics 2024 questions

1. An ideal transformer has 1200 turns on its primary coil and 150 turns on its secondary coil. If the primary voltage is 240 V, what is the secondary voltage?
  1. 30 V
  2. 15 V
  3. 60 V
  4. 480 V

Answer: A. 30 V

For an ideal transformer, Vs/Vp = Ns/Np, so Vs = 240 x 150/1200 = 30 V.

2. An alternating voltage has a peak value of 170 V. What is its r.m.s. value, to the nearest whole number?
  1. 85 V
  2. 120 V
  3. 170 V
  4. 240 V

Answer: B. 120 V

The r.m.s. value is the peak value divided by sqrt(2), giving approximately 120 V.

3. An object is placed 30 cm from a converging lens of focal length 20 cm. How far from the lens is the real image formed?
  1. 12 cm
  2. 24 cm
  3. 60 cm
  4. 120 cm

Answer: C. 60 cm

Using 1/f = 1/u + 1/v gives 1/v = 1/20 - 1/30 = 1/60, so v = 60 cm.

4. A photon has frequency 5.0 x 10^14 Hz. If Planck's constant is 6.6 x 10^-34 J s, what is its energy?
  1. 1.3 x 10^-19 J
  2. 2.0 x 10^-19 J
  3. 6.6 x 10^-19 J
  4. 3.3 x 10^-19 J

Answer: D. 3.3 x 10^-19 J

Photon energy E = hf = 6.6 x 10^-34 x 5.0 x 10^14 = 3.3 x 10^-19 J.

5. Which of the following emissions is least penetrating through matter?
  1. Gamma radiation
  2. An alpha particle
  3. A beta particle
  4. An X-ray photon

Answer: B. An alpha particle

Alpha particles have the lowest penetrating power and can be stopped by a sheet of paper or the outer skin.
