Sample WAEC WASSCE Physics 2021 questions

1. A particle executes simple harmonic motion with amplitude 0.08 m and angular frequency 5 rad s^-1. What is its maximum speed?
  1. 0.40 m s^-1
  2. 0.016 m s^-1
  3. 2.5 m s^-1
  4. 13 m s^-1

Answer: A. 0.40 m s^-1

The maximum speed is omega times amplitude, giving 5 x 0.08 = 0.40 m s^-1.

2. A wave has frequency 250 Hz and wavelength 1.2 m. What is its speed?
  1. 208 m s^-1
  2. 250 m s^-1
  3. 360 m s^-1
  4. 300 m s^-1

Answer: D. 300 m s^-1

Wave speed equals frequency times wavelength, so v = 250 x 1.2 = 300 m s^-1.

3. A sound wave travels through air at 340 m s^-1 and has frequency 680 Hz. What is its wavelength?
  1. 0.25 m
  2. 0.50 m
  3. 2.0 m
  4. 4.0 m

Answer: B. 0.50 m

Wavelength is speed divided by frequency, giving 340/680 = 0.50 m.

4. A ray of light strikes a plane mirror at an angle of incidence of 32 degrees. What is the angle between the incident ray and the reflected ray?
  1. 32 degrees
  2. 58 degrees
  3. 90 degrees
  4. 64 degrees

Answer: D. 64 degrees

The angle of reflection is 32 degrees, so the angle between the rays is 32 + 32 = 64 degrees.

5. Light enters glass from air at an angle of incidence of 30 degrees and refracts at 19 degrees. What is the approximate refractive index of the glass?
  1. 0.63
  2. 1.05
  3. 2.62
  4. 1.54

Answer: D. 1.54

By Snell's law for air to glass, n = sin 30 degrees/sin 19 degrees, approximately 1.54.
