Sample WAEC WASSCE Physics 2005 questions

1. A 12 N force moves a box 5 m in the direction of the force. How much work is done?
  1. 17 J
  2. 60 J
  3. 2.4 J
  4. 120 J

Answer: B. 60 J

Work done is force multiplied by displacement, so W = 12 x 5 = 60 J.

2. A motor transfers 600 J of energy in 20 s. What is its power?
  1. 12 W
  2. 20 W
  3. 30 W
  4. 120 W

Answer: C. 30 W

Power is energy transferred per time, giving 600/20 = 30 W.

3. A machine receives 300 J of energy and delivers 240 J of useful work. What is its efficiency?
  1. 80%
  2. 60%
  3. 125%
  4. 20%

Answer: A. 80%

Efficiency is useful output divided by input times 100%, so (240/300) x 100% = 80%.

4. What is the pressure due to water at a depth of 2.0 m if the density of water is 1000 kg/m^3 and g = 10 m/s^2?
  1. 2000 Pa
  2. 5000 Pa
  3. 10000 Pa
  4. 20000 Pa

Answer: D. 20000 Pa

Liquid pressure is rho gh, so 1000 x 10 x 2.0 = 20000 Pa.

5. A hydraulic press has a small piston of area 0.02 m^2 and a large piston of area 0.50 m^2; what load can a 40 N force on the small piston support ideally?
  1. 40 N
  2. 1000 N
  3. 200 N
  4. 20 N

Answer: B. 1000 N

Pressure is transmitted equally, so the load is 40 x (0.50/0.02) = 1000 N.
