Sample WAEC WASSCE Physics 2014 questions

1. A radioactive sample has a mass of 160 g and a half-life of 6 h. What mass remains after 24 h?
  1. 10 g
  2. 20 g
  3. 5 g
  4. 40 g

Answer: A. 10 g

Twenty-four hours is four half-lives, so the remaining mass is 160/2^4 = 10 g.

2. A metal has a work function of 2.2 eV and is illuminated by photons of energy 5.0 eV. What is the maximum kinetic energy of the emitted electrons?
  1. 7.2 eV
  2. 2.8 eV
  3. 2.2 eV
  4. 5.0 eV

Answer: B. 2.8 eV

The maximum kinetic energy is the photon energy minus the work function, giving 5.0 - 2.2 = 2.8 eV.

3. How should a p-n junction diode be connected to allow a large current to pass through it?
  1. Its p-side connected to the negative terminal
  2. Its n-side connected to the positive terminal and p-side left unconnected
  3. Its p-side connected to the positive terminal and n-side to the negative terminal
  4. Its p-side and n-side connected to the same terminal

Answer: C. Its p-side connected to the positive terminal and n-side to the negative terminal

A diode conducts readily when forward biased, with its p-side positive relative to its n-side.

4. An ideal transformer has 400 turns in its primary coil and 80 turns in its secondary coil. If the primary voltage is 200 V, what is the secondary voltage?
  1. 1,000 V
  2. 200 V
  3. 80 V
  4. 40 V

Answer: D. 40 V

For an ideal transformer, Vs/Vp = Ns/Np, so Vs = 200 x 80/400 = 40 V.

5. Which change will increase the magnitude of the induced e.m.f. in a coil?
  1. Increasing the rate at which magnetic flux through the coil changes
  2. Keeping the magnetic flux constant for longer
  3. Reducing the number of turns while keeping the flux change the same
  4. Making the coil stationary in a uniform magnetic field

Answer: A. Increasing the rate at which magnetic flux through the coil changes

Faraday's law states that induced e.m.f. increases with the rate of change of magnetic flux linkage.
