Sample WAEC WASSCE Physics 2010 questions

1. A sound wave travels through air at 330 m/s and has a wavelength of 0.75 m. What is its frequency?
  1. 220 Hz
  2. 440 Hz
  3. 495 Hz
  4. 660 Hz

Answer: B. 440 Hz

The frequency is v/lambda = 330/0.75 = 440 Hz.

2. A person hears an echo 1.2 s after shouting toward a cliff; if sound travels at 340 m/s, how far away is the cliff?
  1. 204 m
  2. 340 m
  3. 408 m
  4. 566 m

Answer: A. 204 m

The sound travels to the cliff and back, so the distance is 340 x 1.2/2 = 204 m.

3. The distance between two consecutive nodes on a stretched string is 0.30 m. What is the wavelength of the stationary wave?
  1. 0.15 m
  2. 0.30 m
  3. 0.60 m
  4. 1.20 m

Answer: C. 0.60 m

Consecutive nodes are separated by half a wavelength, so lambda = 2 x 0.30 = 0.60 m.

4. A ray enters glass of refractive index 1.5 from air at an angle of incidence of 30 degrees. What is the approximate angle of refraction?
  1. 14.5 degrees
  2. 15.0 degrees
  3. 30.0 degrees
  4. 19.5 degrees

Answer: D. 19.5 degrees

Snell's law gives sin r = sin 30/1.5 = 1/3, so r is about 19.5 degrees.

5. An object is 30 cm from a converging lens of focal length 20 cm. How far from the lens is the real image formed?
  1. 60 cm
  2. 12 cm
  3. 30 cm
  4. 50 cm

Answer: A. 60 cm

Using 1/f = 1/u + 1/v gives 1/v = 1/20 - 1/30 = 1/60, hence v = 60 cm.
