Sample WAEC WASSCE Physics 2011 questions

1. A capacitor stores a charge of 12 microcoulombs when connected to a 6 V supply. What is its capacitance?
  1. 2 microfarads
  2. 0.5 microfarads
  3. 18 microfarads
  4. 72 microfarads

Answer: A. 2 microfarads

Using C = Q/V gives 12/6 = 2 microfarads.

2. A current of 0.5 A flows through an 8 ohm resistor. What is the potential difference across it?
  1. 2 V
  2. 4 V
  3. 8.5 V
  4. 16 V

Answer: B. 4 V

Ohm's law gives V = IR = 0.5 x 8 = 4 V.

3. Three resistors of 3 ohms, 5 ohms and 4 ohms are connected in series. What is their total resistance?
  1. 1.25 ohms
  2. 9 ohms
  3. 12 ohms
  4. 60 ohms

Answer: C. 12 ohms

Resistances in series add to give 3 + 5 + 4 = 12 ohms.

4. Two identical 6 ohm resistors are connected in parallel. What is their equivalent resistance?
  1. 12 ohms
  2. 6 ohms
  3. 4 ohms
  4. 3 ohms

Answer: D. 3 ohms

For two equal parallel resistors, the equivalent resistance is half of 6 ohms, or 3 ohms.

5. A lamp operates at 12 V and draws a current of 2 A. What is its electrical power?
  1. 24 W
  2. 6 W
  3. 14 W
  4. 120 W

Answer: A. 24 W

Electrical power is P = VI = 12 x 2 = 24 W.
