Sample NECO SSCE Physics 2017 questions

1. A vehicle travels at a constant speed of 72 km/h. What is this speed in m/s?
  1. 18 m/s
  2. 20 m/s
  3. 25 m/s
  4. 72 m/s

Answer: B. 20 m/s

Converting kilometres per hour to metres per second gives 72 x 1000/3600 = 20 m/s.

2. A student walks 6 m east and then 8 m north. What is the magnitude of the student's displacement from the starting point?
  1. 2 m
  2. 7 m
  3. 14 m
  4. 10 m

Answer: D. 10 m

The perpendicular displacements give a resultant of sqrt(6^2 + 8^2) = 10 m.

3. A car starts from rest and reaches a speed of 20 m/s in 5 s. What is its average acceleration?
  1. 4 m/s^2
  2. 5 m/s^2
  3. 15 m/s^2
  4. 100 m/s^2

Answer: A. 4 m/s^2

The acceleration is the change in velocity divided by time, so a = (20 - 0)/5 = 4 m/s^2.

4. A body moving at 5 m/s accelerates uniformly at 2 m/s^2 for 4 s. How far does it travel in that time?
  1. 28 m
  2. 32 m
  3. 36 m
  4. 40 m

Answer: C. 36 m

Using s = ut + 0.5at^2 gives s = 5(4) + 0.5(2)(4^2) = 36 m.

5. What resultant force is required to give a 2 kg object an acceleration of 3 m/s^2?
  1. 1.5 N
  2. 5 N
  3. 9 N
  4. 6 N

Answer: D. 6 N

Newton's second law gives F = ma = 2 x 3 = 6 N.
