Sample NECO SSCE Physics 2003 questions

1. A 2.0 m steel rod has a linear expansivity of 1.2 x 10^-5 K^-1. How much does its length increase when its temperature rises by 50 K?
  1. 0.12 mm
  2. 1.2 mm
  3. 12 mm
  4. 120 mm

Answer: B. 1.2 mm

The increase is alpha x length x temperature rise = 1.2 x 10^-5 x 2.0 x 50 = 0.0012 m, or 1.2 mm.

2. A 0.20 kg quantity of water at 80°C is mixed with 0.30 kg of water at 20°C in an insulated vessel. What is the final temperature?
  1. 44°C
  2. 50°C
  3. 56°C
  4. 60°C

Answer: A. 44°C

Equal specific heats give a final temperature of (0.20 x 80 + 0.30 x 20)/0.50 = 44°C.

3. How much energy is required to melt 0.50 kg of ice at 0°C if the specific latent heat of fusion of ice is 3.34 x 10^5 J/kg?
  1. 16.7 kJ
  2. 83.5 kJ
  3. 167 kJ
  4. 668 kJ

Answer: C. 167 kJ

The energy is mL = 0.50 x 3.34 x 10^5 = 1.67 x 10^5 J, or 167 kJ.

4. A fixed mass of gas has a pressure of 100 kPa at 27°C. What is its pressure when heated at constant volume to 127°C?
  1. 75 kPa
  2. 100 kPa
  3. 125 kPa
  4. 133 kPa

Answer: D. 133 kPa

At constant volume pressure is proportional to kelvin temperature, so P2 = 100 x 400/300 = 133 kPa.

5. A wave has a frequency of 12 Hz and a wavelength of 0.75 m. What is its speed?
  1. 9.0 m/s
  2. 12 m/s
  3. 16 m/s
  4. 90 m/s

Answer: A. 9.0 m/s

Wave speed equals frequency x wavelength = 12 x 0.75 = 9.0 m/s.
