Sample NECO SSCE Physics 2013 questions

1. A bar magnet is pushed into a coil connected to a galvanometer. Which change will increase the induced current, assuming the coil and magnet are unchanged?
  1. Push the magnet into the coil more quickly.
  2. Hold the magnet still inside the coil.
  3. Disconnect the galvanometer from the coil.
  4. Use a shorter connecting wire without moving the magnet.

Answer: A. Push the magnet into the coil more quickly.

Moving the magnet more quickly increases the rate of change of magnetic flux through the coil and hence the induced emf.

2. An ideal transformer has 1,200 turns on its primary coil and 100 turns on its secondary coil. If the primary voltage is 240 V, what is the secondary voltage?
  1. 2 V
  2. 20 V
  3. 120 V
  4. 2,880 V

Answer: B. 20 V

The turns ratio gives Vs/Vp = 100/1200, so Vs = 240 x 100/1200 = 20 V.

3. What is the main electrical property of a semiconductor diode connected in a simple circuit?
  1. It stores charge equally in both directions.
  2. It maintains a constant current regardless of voltage.
  3. It allows current mainly in one direction.
  4. It converts direct current into alternating current.

Answer: C. It allows current mainly in one direction.

A diode is designed to conduct readily when forward-biased and to oppose current when reverse-biased.

4. Light shines on a metal whose threshold frequency is f0. Which condition can cause photoelectrons to be emitted?
  1. Light of any frequency if its intensity is sufficiently high.
  2. Light with frequency below f0, provided it shines for long enough.
  3. Light with frequency exactly zero and very high intensity.
  4. Light with frequency greater than f0.

Answer: D. Light with frequency greater than f0.

Photoelectric emission occurs when the incident light frequency exceeds the metal's threshold frequency.

5. A radioactive sample has a mass of 80 g and a half-life of 6 hours. What mass remains after 18 hours?
  1. 10 g
  2. 20 g
  3. 30 g
  4. 40 g

Answer: A. 10 g

Eighteen hours is three half-lives, so the remaining mass is 80/2^3 = 10 g.
