Sample NECO SSCE Physics 2011 questions

1. An ideal transformer has 600 turns on its primary coil and 50 turns on its secondary coil. If the primary voltage is 240 V, what is the secondary voltage?
  1. 10 V
  2. 20 V
  3. 30 V
  4. 40 V

Answer: B. 20 V

For an ideal transformer, Vs/Vp = Ns/Np, so Vs = 240 x 50/600 = 20 V.

2. The magnetic flux through each turn of a 200-turn coil changes by 0.003 Wb in 0.05 s. What is the magnitude of the average induced e.m.f.?
  1. 6 V
  2. 8 V
  3. 12 V
  4. 24 V

Answer: C. 12 V

Faraday's law gives emf = N x change in flux/time = 200 x 0.003/0.05 = 12 V.

3. An alternating voltage has a peak value of 170 V. What is its approximate r.m.s. value?
  1. 120 V
  2. 170 V
  3. 240 V
  4. 340 V

Answer: A. 120 V

The r.m.s. voltage is peak voltage divided by sqrt(2), giving about 120 V.

4. Two capacitors of 3 microfarads and 6 microfarads are connected in parallel. What is their combined capacitance?
  1. 2 microfarads
  2. 3 microfarads
  3. 6 microfarads
  4. 9 microfarads

Answer: D. 9 microfarads

Capacitances add in parallel, so the total is 3 + 6 = 9 microfarads.

5. A 6-ohm resistor and a 3-ohm resistor are connected in parallel. What is their equivalent resistance?
  1. 1 ohm
  2. 2 ohms
  3. 4.5 ohms
  4. 9 ohms

Answer: B. 2 ohms

The reciprocal equivalent resistance is 1/6 + 1/3 = 1/2, so the equivalent is 2 ohms.
