Sample NECO SSCE Physics 2001 questions

1. A rectangular metal plate is 12.0 cm long and 5.0 cm wide. What is its area in square metres?
  1. 6.0 x 10^-3 m^2
  2. 6.0 x 10^-2 m^2
  3. 60 m^2
  4. 0.60 m^2

Answer: A. 6.0 x 10^-3 m^2

The area is 12.0 x 5.0 = 60 cm^2, which is 60 x 10^-4 = 6.0 x 10^-3 m^2.

2. Two forces of 6 N and 8 N act at right angles to each other. What is the magnitude of their resultant?
  1. 2 N
  2. 48 N
  3. 14 N
  4. 10 N

Answer: D. 10 N

For perpendicular forces the resultant is sqrt(6^2 + 8^2) = 10 N.

3. A cyclist travels 180 m in 12 s at constant speed. What is the cyclist's speed?
  1. 12 m/s
  2. 21.6 m/s
  3. 18 m/s
  4. 15 m/s

Answer: D. 15 m/s

Speed is distance divided by time, so 180/12 = 15 m/s.

4. A car increases its velocity uniformly from 4 m/s to 16 m/s in 6 s. What is its acceleration?
  1. 2 m/s^2
  2. 1.5 m/s^2
  3. 1 m/s^2
  4. 3.3 m/s^2

Answer: A. 2 m/s^2

Acceleration is the change in velocity divided by time: (16 - 4)/6 = 2 m/s^2.

5. A stone is dropped from rest and falls freely for 3 s. Taking g = 10 m/s^2, how far does it fall?
  1. 15 m
  2. 30 m
  3. 90 m
  4. 45 m

Answer: D. 45 m

The distance is ut + 0.5gt^2 = 0 + 0.5 x 10 x 3^2 = 45 m.
