1. A radioactive sample has a mass of 800 mg and a half-life of 4 days. What mass remains after 12 days?
  1. 100 mg
  2. 200 mg
  3. 50 mg
  4. 400 mg

Answer: A. 100 mg

Twelve days is three half-lives, so the mass is 800/2^3 = 100 mg.

2. A silicon diode is connected in series with a lamp and a cell. Which property allows the diode to control the current direction?
  1. It stores charge permanently
  2. It conducts readily in one direction and poorly in the other
  3. Its resistance is always zero
  4. It produces an alternating voltage

Answer: B. It conducts readily in one direction and poorly in the other

A diode conducts mainly when forward-biased and blocks current when reverse-biased.

3. The magnetic flux through a coil changes from 0.02 Wb to 0.08 Wb in 0.03 s. What is the magnitude of the average induced e.m.f. in a single-turn coil?
  1. 0.5 V
  2. 1.0 V
  3. 2.0 V
  4. 3.0 V

Answer: C. 2.0 V

The average induced e.m.f. is the flux change divided by time, giving (0.08 - 0.02)/0.03 = 2.0 V.

4. An ideal transformer has 1000 turns in its primary coil and 50 turns in its secondary coil. If the primary voltage is 240 V, what is the secondary voltage?
  1. 24 V
  2. 120 V
  3. 2400 V
  4. 12 V

Answer: D. 12 V

For an ideal transformer, Vs/Vp = Ns/Np, so Vs = 240 x 50/1000 = 12 V.

5. The threshold frequency of a metal is 5.0 x 10^14 Hz. Light of frequency 8.0 x 10^14 Hz shines on it. Taking Planck's constant as 6.6 x 10^-34 J s, what is the maximum kinetic energy of the emitted electrons?
  1. 1.98 x 10^-19 J
  2. 3.30 x 10^-19 J
  3. 5.28 x 10^-19 J
  4. 8.58 x 10^-19 J

Answer: A. 1.98 x 10^-19 J

The maximum kinetic energy is h(f - f0) = 6.6 x 10^-34 x 3.0 x 10^14 = 1.98 x 10^-19 J.
