Sample JAMB UTME Physics 2013 questions

1. A 6 ohm resistor is connected across a 12 V supply. What current flows through it?
  1. 0.5 A
  2. 2 A
  3. 6 A
  4. 72 A

Answer: B. 2 A

By Ohm's law, I = V/R = 12/6 = 2 A.

2. Three resistors of 2 ohm, 3 ohm and 5 ohm are connected in series to a 20 V battery. What is the current?
  1. 0.5 A
  2. 1 A
  3. 2 A
  4. 10 A

Answer: C. 2 A

The total series resistance is 2 + 3 + 5 = 10 ohm, so I = 20/10 = 2 A.

3. Two 6 ohm resistors are connected in parallel. What is their equivalent resistance?
  1. 3 ohm
  2. 6 ohm
  3. 12 ohm
  4. 36 ohm

Answer: A. 3 ohm

For two equal resistors in parallel, the equivalent resistance is half of either one, or 3 ohm.

4. An appliance operates at 240 V and draws a current of 2 A. What electrical power does it use?
  1. 120 W
  2. 242 W
  3. 360 W
  4. 480 W

Answer: D. 480 W

Electrical power P = VI = 240 x 2 = 480 W.

5. A coil has 200 turns and its magnetic flux per turn changes uniformly by 0.03 Wb in 0.2 s. What is the magnitude of the induced e.m.f.?
  1. 3 V
  2. 30 V
  3. 60 V
  4. 300 V

Answer: B. 30 V

Faraday's law gives E = N(change in flux)/time = 200 x 0.03/0.2 = 30 V.
