Sample JAMB UTME Physics 2010 questions

1. A coil has 200 turns. The magnetic flux through each turn decreases uniformly from 0.030 Wb to 0.010 Wb in 0.020 s. What is the magnitude of the induced e.m.f.?
  1. 20 V
  2. 200 V
  3. 2 V
  4. 400 V

Answer: B. 200 V

The induced e.m.f. is N times the flux change per second, giving 200 x (0.020/0.020) = 200 V.

2. A 3 ohm resistor and a 4 ohm inductive reactance are connected in series to a 100 V alternating supply. What is the current in the circuit?
  1. 20 A
  2. 25 A
  3. 12.5 A
  4. 33.3 A

Answer: A. 20 A

The impedance is sqrt(3^2 + 4^2) = 5 ohm, so the current is 100/5 = 20 A.

3. Two capacitors of capacitance 6 microfarads and 3 microfarads are connected in series. What is their equivalent capacitance?
  1. 9 microfarads
  2. 4.5 microfarads
  3. 3 microfarads
  4. 2 microfarads

Answer: D. 2 microfarads

For series capacitors, 1/C = 1/6 + 1/3, so the equivalent capacitance is 2 microfarads.

4. A charge of 2.0 x 10^-6 C moves at 3.0 x 10^4 m/s perpendicular to a magnetic field of flux density 0.50 T. What is the magnetic force on it?
  1. 0.003 N
  2. 0.30 N
  3. 0.030 N
  4. 3.0 N

Answer: C. 0.030 N

For perpendicular motion, F = qvB = 2.0 x 10^-6 x 3.0 x 10^4 x 0.50 = 0.030 N.

5. A photon supplies 6.0 x 10^-19 J to a metal whose work function is 2.0 x 10^-19 J. What is the maximum kinetic energy of the emitted electron?
  1. 8.0 x 10^-19 J
  2. 4.0 x 10^-19 J
  3. 3.0 x 10^-19 J
  4. 1.2 x 10^-18 J

Answer: B. 4.0 x 10^-19 J

The maximum kinetic energy equals photon energy minus work function, or 4.0 x 10^-19 J.
