JAMB vs WAEC vs NECO vs Post-UTME: What Is the Difference?

By the PassSpark team · 2026-10-22 · JAMB, WAEC, NECO, Post-UTME

Nigerian students often hear these four names together. They are different exams with different purposes.

WAEC and NECO: school-leaving exams

WAEC (the West African Examinations Council) and NECO (the National Examinations Council) run senior secondary school certificate exams. Universities usually ask for credits in the right subjects, including English and Mathematics, from one of them. Both test the school syllabus subject by subject.

JAMB UTME: the entrance exam

JAMB (the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board) runs the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination. It is a computer-based test used to compete for admission into universities and other tertiary institutions. Your course decides your subject combination.

Post-UTME: the school's own screening

After UTME, many universities run their own screening, called Post-UTME. The format differs by school: some use a computer test, some combine it with your UTME score and O'level results. Always check the specific university's admission page for the current rules.
