There are 3 ways to choose 2 blue counters from 3 and 45 ways to choose any 2 from 10, giving 3/45 = 1/15.

2. The mean of the six numbers 4, 7, 8, x, 11 and 14 is 9. Find x.

  4. 14

Answer: B. 10

The total must be 6 × 9 = 54, and the five known numbers sum to 44, so x = 10.

3. The position vectors of points A and B are (2, -1) and (-3, 4), respectively. What is vector AB?
  1. (5, -5)
  2. (-1, 3)
  3. (-5, 5)
  4. (5, 3)

Answer: C. (-5, 5)

Vector AB is B minus A, which is (-3 - 2, 4 - (-1)) = (-5, 5).

4. What is the image of the point (3, -2) under reflection in the line y = x?

  3. (-2, -3)
  4. (-2, 3)

Answer: D. (-2, 3)

Reflection in y = x interchanges the coordinates, so (3, -2) becomes (-2, 3).

5. From town P, town Q is on a bearing of 060°. From Q, town R is on a bearing of 150°. What is the smaller angle PQR?
  1. 90°
  2. 60°
  3. 120°
  4. 30°

Answer: A. 90°

The bearing from Q back to P is 240°, and the difference between 240° and 150° is 90°.
