1. A bag contains 3 red, 4 blue and 5 green counters. One counter is selected at random. What is the probability that it is not blue?
  1. 1/3
  2. 1/2
  3. 2/3
  4. 3/4

Answer: C. 2/3

There are 8 non-blue counters out of 12, so the probability is 8/12 = 2/3.

2. Find the median of the numbers 5, 7, 8, 8, 9 and 12.
  1. 8
  2. 7.5
  3. 8.5
  4. 9

Answer: A. 8

The middle two numbers are both 8, so their average, the median, is 8.

3. A closed cylinder has radius 3 cm and height 5 cm. What is its total surface area?
  1. 30pi cm^2
  2. 36pi cm^2
  3. 45pi cm^2
  4. 48pi cm^2

Answer: D. 48pi cm^2

The total surface area is 2pi r(r + h) = 2pi(3)(8) = 48pi cm^2.

4. Find the area of a 60-degree sector of a circle of radius 7 cm, in terms of pi.
  1. 7pi/6 cm^2
  2. 49pi/6 cm^2
  3. 49pi/3 cm^2
  4. 14pi cm^2

Answer: B. 49pi/6 cm^2

The sector is 60/360 of the circle, so its area is (1/6)pi(7^2) = 49pi/6 cm^2.

5. The bearing of town B from town A is 070 degrees. What is the bearing of A from B?
  1. 110 degrees
  2. 160 degrees
  3. 250 degrees
  4. 290 degrees

Answer: C. 250 degrees

The reverse bearing differs by 180 degrees, so 070 + 180 = 250 degrees.
